Road safety programme improves traffic situation

Staff Correspondent

  • Motorcyclists and others are following traffic signals
  • Police are punishing motorcyclists who jump signals

HUBLI: Intensification of the drive against vehicle owners violating traffic rules and regulations has improved the traffic situation in the twin cities.

The 18th National Road Safety Week being observed jointly by the district administration and the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate although has contributed towards creating awareness, punishing the offenders has made a great impact.

Only a few vehicle owners in the twin cities adhered to traffic rules and regulations and majority of vehicle owners violated the rules with impunity.

But over the last few days, things have changed for the better. Motorists who hitherto never bothered to take note of traffic signals at junctions have started observing them. What is noteworthy is that wherever the traffic signals are working, motorcyclists and drivers of other vehicles have started following them.

Police have started penalising motorcyclists who jump signals. In all these days, the police in most cases were only checking the licence and vehicle documents.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Dileep has made it clear that punishing drivers for violating regulations would continue even after the Road Safety Week.
