Contest to bring out musical fervour of students

Andal Pasurams, Nachiar Tirumozhi, Tiruppaavai competitions held at Srivilliputtur

MUSIC SEASON: Students from various schools in Virudhunagar district participating in competitions held at Andal Temple in Srivilliputtur.

MADURAI: Though every month of the year in the Tamil calendar is unique, Margazhi is special as a harbinger of music season. Hymns from `Tiruppavai' and `Tiruvempavai' fill the early morning air.

With the objective of tapping the religious fervour in youth and introduce them to `Andal Pasurams and Nachiar Tirumozhi,' Tiruppaavai competitions were conducted for students of Virudhunagar district on Thursday and Friday at Andal Temple, Srivilliputtur.

The competitions were divided into two categories. Students from standard I to VIII comprised the first group while those of standard IX to XII were in the second group.

On the first day, competitions on Tiruppavai recital, music and elocution were held for students of the first group. The second group participated in Nachiyar Tirumozhi recital competition, music, quiz, essay and elocution competitions.

Students from both the categories also participated in painting and rangoli competitions.

In the first category, as many as 700 students from 46 schools and 300 from 30 schools in the secondary category from Srivilliputtur, Rajapalayam, Sivaksi, Sattur, Mugavoor and Keezharajakulamaran participated in the competitions.

The District Collector, S.S. Jawahar, will distribute prizes and certificates to winners at a function scheduled for Wednesday.
