BERHAMPUR: Organisations and political parties in Gajapati district are up in arms against the proposed irrigation project on the Mahendratanaya River by Andhra Pradesh.On Sunday Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy unveiled the proposal to take up a Rs 127 crores project on the river in Srikakulam district involving construction of two reservoirs. Pradeep Nayak, a social activist, and BJD leader of Gajapati district, said the project would affect irrigation facilities to around 2,000 acres in Gosani block of the district. Organisations and political parties in Gajapati district have demanded the State Government immediately take up proposed irrigation project at Kaithapadar in Raigada block on the Mahendratanaya river to save the State's interests.State general secretary of Bharatiya Janshakti Party R.K.Patro said his party would launch an agitation if the concrete steps were not taken by March. Congress MLA Trinath Sahu urged all political parties to to oppose the Andhra Pradesh project.
