Book selection panel set up

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Government on Tuesday announced the constitution of the 19-member book selection committee. Headed by the Director of Public Libraries, the panel includes officials, academics and poets. Apart from the Directors of Tamil Development and Connemara Library, Ilayabharathi, Salma, and A.R. Venkatachalapathy were among the other members, according to an official release.

This follows appeals from different sections including the Booksellers and Publishers' Association for the constitution of the committee.

The Government has been urged to implement early its decision of increasing the number of copies of Tamil books purchased for the libraries from 750 to 1,000. In another release, the Government said it constituted a 12-member Chennai district library authority.
