Madras varsity woos industries

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI : Representatives of 20 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) participated in a meeting organised by University of Madras to showcase its strengths and invite the enterprises to convert the patents secured by the university into marketable products.

About 25 faculty members, who were involved in securing the patents, or have facilities to offer and share with the SMEs, made presentations to the industry representatives.

The university had a technology business incubator (TBI) worth Rs.4.97 crore (including Rs. 2.96 crore funding from the Union Department of Science and Technology for capital expenditure).

According to Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran, at present university researchers had secured 11 patents basically in areas of herbal and biotech/pharma products. These patent findings were presented to the industry, which, in turn, highlighted its requirements and support needed. The Vice-Chancellor and the faculty also told the industry representatives that the university had major equipment required for research, analysis and testing.
