CHENNAI: Tamil rhymes for children, stories from a Sri Lankan Tamil writer, the screenplay of a recent film and poetry the ingredients of the book review session at Landmark in City Centre were selected to appeal to literature lovers of all ages. Lyricist Na. Muthukumar recalled the great attention devoted to detail in director Balu Mahendra's screenplays. The latter's `Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam' screenplay was among the books released at the event. Balu Mahendra termed his `Veedu' and `Sandhya Raagam' as the two films with the fewest compromises and mistakes. He expressed grief at finding that the prints of some his films were destroyed. He was undertaking the work of compiling his screenplays for print with the help of his students, he said. The collection of rhymes for children, `Konjum Tamil' by Ambi, had some of the best production quality in contemporary Tamil publishing, said Thiruppur Krishnan, writer.
Traditional retelling
The retelling of the traditional crow and fox stories with a modern twist was among the more interesting poems, he said. S. Ponnudurai or Espo was praised as a writer of rare skill for having brought a strong humanism and literary sensibility to the politics of Sri Lanka. The book, titled `Espo Kathaigal', contains 53 of his stories. Compere Revathi Shankar praised Rama Thiruvudaiyan's poetry in `Anandiyam & Ponmahoolam' for their earthy quality and sang one of the poems in folk style.
