For "national unity coming under strain in Assam"

NEW DELHI : The Janata Dal (United) on Tuesday urged the Centre to declare violence-affected areas of Assam as "disturbed areas" and deploy Central armed forces to restore peace.

Holding Home Minister Shivraj Patil accountable "for national unity coming under strain in Assam due to the massacre of non-Assamese residents," the party demanded his resignation.

"The time has come for the Home Minister to take moral responsibility and resign from his post."

Party president Sharad Yadav convened an urgent meeting of office-bearers to review the situation in the State and expressed "serious concern" at the continued massacre andexodus of migrant labour from the State.

The meeting held that the current situation was the result of "undeclared alliance" of the Congress and the Government of Assam with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
