Thanjavur: The Thanjavur Medical College Road will soon become a four-way road.

The Highways Department will take up the work on the six-km road in four stretches — one from overbridge to Thirupurasundari Nagar, another from Thirupurasundari Nagar to Mangalapuram, third stretch from Mangalapuram to Medical College first gate and the fourth from Medical College first gate to the last gate.

According to N. Periyaraj, Divisional Engineer, Highways Department, out of these four stretches, tenders have been finalised and work will start soon on two stretches — from overbridge to Thirupurasundari Nagar and Mangalapuram to Medical College first gate.

Subsequently, the other two stretches will be completed.

Funds allotted by the State Government for the purpose is Rs. 3 crore. A sum of Rs. 75 lakh will be spent on each stretch.

To facilitate the expansion of the road, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has started moving telephone pillars. It has to move as many as 21 pillars and three junction boxes. The Electricity department has to relocate 109 electric poles and three transformers. The Highways department has to remove 71 trees for the expansion.

"We have sought the co-operation of all departments," Mr. Periyaraj said.

Four temples are also to be relocated. They are Muniyandavar temple, Anjaneya temple, Murugan temple and Ganapathy Nagar temple.

The existing seven-metre-road will be widened to 14 metres with a centre median of 1.20 metre. Earth shouldering will be done on either side to 1.50 metre. This will help to decongest traffic on the road.

Five hundred and sixty buses, 1,659 cars, 347 trucks and 2,923 two-wheelers ply on the road now every day. With most of the residential colonies located on either side, vehicle movement is heavy on the road.

As the road leads to the Medical College, ambulances and other hospital vehicles ply round the clock. Traffic congestion during peak hours has become a regular feature.

Thanjavur residents said that the move is a timely one and will make the road safe.
