THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by various trader's organisations in the State to protest against anti-piracy raids in video rental outlets was total in the city. No incidents of violence were reported. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed. Hartal supporters had exempted medical shops, hotels and restaurants from the strike. Autorickshaws, taxis, private buses, cars and two-wheelers plied as usual. Palayam and Chalai markets wore a deserted look. Many shops in the city opened for business at around 5.30 p.m. Earlier, scores of traders owing allegiance to the Vyapara Vyvasaya Ekopana Samithi staged a protest march in front of the Government Secretariat. Samithi leader Nazurudeen said traders would be forced to intensify their protest if the "unjust" raids continued.
