This Day That Age
Mr. Harold Macmillan became Britain's new Prime Minister on January 10 succeeding Sir Anthony Eden, who had resigned. Mr. Macmillan was called to Buckingham Palace after Queen Elizabeth had consulted her elder statesman, Sir Winston Churchill, on the choice of the new Prime Minister. Mr. Macmillan, 62, was Chancellor of the Exchequer in Sir Anthony Eden's Conservative Government. Until the moment Mr. Macmillan went to the Palace the nation was left guessing whether he or Mr. R.A. Butler, the Lord Privy Seal, would become Sir Anthony Eden's successor. The future of Mr. Butler, who had strong claims to the Premiership, now seems uncertain. It was believed that the advice of Sir Winston was a powerful factor in deciding the issue. Sir Winston has always been regarded as more friendly towards Mr. Macmillan than to Mr. Butler.
