CHENNAI: A whirlwind struck Velammal Matric0ulation Higher Secondary School at Mogappair incessantly for 45 minutes on Tuesday. Indian cricket stalwart Kapil Dev visited the school to felicitate sportspersons who represented the State and the country in various disciplines. Several years have passed since he retired from the Indian cricket team, but the obsession with this icon called `Haryana Hurricane' remains undiminished. It was evident from the sheer enthusiasm the children displayed towards their favourite cricket hero. The school ground was teeming with students, some of them spilling over to the buildings around. Giving away scholarships worth Rs.14.80 lakh to 23 sports champions of different age groups, Mr. Dev had some encouraging words for the youngsters. "Set yourself high goals, as it is the right age to think big." He advised the students to balance sports and academics for overall achievement. He wanted at least one student to represent India at the 2011 World Cup. What about his own heroes? South African leader Nelson Mandela was his role model for his respect towards India. Mahatma Gandhi was his other hero. Kapil Dev also recalled that it was Chennai where he maintained a good record and praised the city's hospitality. A smiling Kapil eagerly fielded questions from the students. "Cricket is a game for everybody and not just for the elite," he said and added that self-belief was more important. When asked to advise students playing domestic matches, he said, "Play in streets, play in schools, clubs and score 100 runs." Observing that there was "no right age for cricket", he explained that the spirit of learning was important. He quoted Sachin Tendulkar, who started playing at a young age, and the schoolboys of Hyderabad for their record-breaking feat. "Cricket is a game for the youth. Never give up. If you get a chance, grab it." This was his suggestion for aspiring cricketers. For a student's question on bowling, he said dedication and discipline were essential for bowlers.
