Medha Patkar arrested

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: Social activist Medha Patkar was detained here on Wednesday. She was subsequently arrested and taken to the local thana late in the evening.

She was on her way to the Howrah railway station to take a train to Singur to resume her agitation against the alleged forcible acquisition of farmland.

A close associate of Ms. Patkar said that she had gone on a hunger strike in support of the farmers' cause at Singur.

The police said they arrested Ms. Patkar under Section 151 of the Indian Penal Code "apprehending breach of peace."

The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader wondered whether "we want Singur and Nandigram to turn into another Narmada ... At least in Narmada, the party cadres do not enter the area [of dispute]", she told The Hindu .
