"No progress in masjid cases"

Special Correspondent

AIMPLB wants notification issued

CHENNAI : All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) president Syed Mohamed Rabe Nadvi, general secretary Syed Nizamuddin and assistant general secretary Mohamed Abdul Rahim Quraishi said criminal cases relating to the Babri Masjid demolition had not made any progress, as the offence was covered by two FIRs, which were under the jurisdiction of thecourts of Rai Bareli and Lucknow. The CBI had filed a common charge sheet.

Though the High Court had said the State Government should issue a notification conferring jurisdiction on one court to try the case under the single charge sheet, the Government had not acted in this regard. Even 14 years after the demolition, the persons responsible had not been brought to book.

At a press conference recently, Mr. Quraishi said the board would bring pressure on the State Government to issue the notification. On compulsory registration of marriages, he said the board felt that one should consider the practicability of the law. What needed to be considered was whether it would be possible to take legislation to the nook and corner of the country. Also, marriage was a religious matter. It differed from religion to religion and from region to region. Further, registration of marriage should not impose conditions. The organisers said a uniform civil code was against the country's interest. They felt it would be better to delete Article 44 from the Constitution (uniform civil code for the citizens) or to exempt religious family laws from the law.

A three-day general session of the AIMPLB began here on Wednesday.
