Playing the right tune

Mandira Nayar

A jazz performance for the Capital

LEGENDS: Pianist Herbie Hancock and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who will soon be performing in the Capital.

NEW DELHI: It really doesn't get bigger than this for Jazz lovers. While the Capital may not be the favourite place for these deeper sounds, two living legends, pianist Herbie Hancock and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, all set to perform in Delhi are ensuring that lovers of Jazz will not complain at least for some time.

Not just about good music, the performance will be much more memorable asit is for a good cause. Playing the "right'' tune, this pianist-saxophonist duo is performing to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Apart from reaching out through their music, they will also be holding master classes for young aspiring musicians. Coming together with nine musicians from the U.S-based Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, they will hold classes, concerts and also travel to Kolkata and Mumbai. And saving the best for the last, they will finally perform here in the Capital on January 16.

Keeping up the Jazz tradition, this is the third year that American Centres have brought American Jazz greats to India under a private-public partnership.

The last few performances have been renowned Jazz singer Al Jarreau, guitarist Earl Klugh and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Kenny Garret.

Those looking for a chance to hear these Jazz greats can collect free passes at the American Center and the U.S. Educational Foundation in India during normal working hours from Wednesday.

With only a limited number of passes available, Jazz lovers wanting to get in should queue up fast if they want to grab a seat.
