CHENNAI: Alleging "political vendetta" behind the move to acquire a portion of the land belonging to the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant, his wife Premalatha has moved the Madras High Court to quash the entire acquisition proceedings. Ms. Premalatha, managing director of the Sri Andal Azhagar Kalyana Mandapam Private Limited, said rival political parties in Tamil Nadu were trying to "throttle and crush" the DMDK, which secured 8.33 per cent of valid polled votes in Assembly elections. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), to which Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu belonged, initiated the acquisition proceedings "under the guise of forming a grade separator at Koyambedu, and without following the mandatory provisions of law." Referring to Mr. Baalu's statement that he would consider any alternative proposal suggested by the parties, they gave a proposal on February 19, 2006. She said their alternative plan was "maliciously rejected" by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on November 1, seven months after the proposal was submitted. According to the petitioner, the authorities concerned were yet to give her copies of a detailed plan for the proposed grade separator and the grounds under which the alsternative proposal was rejected. The NHAI acted in a "hurried manner" and proceeded with the acquisition after the Assembly and local body elections in Tamil Nadu, she said. Claiming that the party head office was sought to be demolished to "achieve a political mileage," she prayed for quashing of the entire acquisition proceedings dated November 18, 2005. She also sought to quash a consequential award passed on December 8, 2006.
