Coimbatore in semifinals

Sattur: Coimbatore entered the semifinals of the 48th State senior inter-district football championship with an authoritative 4-0 victory over Salem at SHV Edward HSS ground here on Wednesday.

The first half witnessed rough play and referee Mahesh had to flash cards frequently.

Coimbatore opened the account in the second minute through Edward's solo.

Salem resorted to rough play at this juncture and Mahesh showed yellow cards to Hemanathan (16th minute) and Elumalai (36th) of Salem, and Arulappan Verghese of Coimbatore (30th).

Salem's Sivakumar and Muniraj of Coimbatore in the 40th minute were shown red cards. Even Edward was shown the yellow card two minutes from half-time.

In the second half, Coimbatore scored three more goals through Sasi Kumar (54th), Selvaraj (68th) and Benny Michel (71st).

Hat-trick by Ganesh

At Madurai, Marimuthu's 82 and Ganesh's four for 10, including a hat-trick, helped SBOA CC chalk out an 88-run victory over Pykara CC in the Madurai DCA first division `A' zone cricket league recently.

The scores:

First division: `A' Zone: SBOA CC 169 in 36 overs (Marimuthu 82) bt Pykara CC 81 in 26 overs (Ganesh four for 10, including a hat-trick).

`B' Zone: Eleven Stars 165 in 40.5 overs (Shyam Arun 74) lost to Mercury CC 166 for four in 33.1 overs (Surya 45).

Majestic Cubs 207 in 43 overs lost to Eleven Bullets 208 for nine in 34.2 overs (Radhakrishman four for 40).

Second division: Mercury Legends 172 for eight in 26 overs bt Fanatic CC 104 in 18 overs (Kani 39 not out).

DDK CC 148 for eight in 28 overs (Kumar 48 not out) lost to Babu Academy 149 for four in 22 overs (Murali 50 not out).

Third division: Jai Hind CC 82 in 17.1 overs lost to IOB RC 83 for six in 12 overs.

Modern Golden Star 195 in 28.4 overs (Ashok five for 23) bt IOB RC 76 in 17.4 overs (Nagaraj five for 19).

Vinodh on the rampage

Five goals by S. Venkateswara Vinodh helped P.T.R. Engineering College (Kappalur) trounce S.L. College of Science Warriors 5-0 in the T.V. Ramasubbier memorial Trophy inter-collegiate football tournament on Wednesday.
