HYDERABAD: The Jiji Irani Challenge Cup all-India cricket tournament will be hosted by the Zoroastrian Club of Hyderabad and Secunderabad from January 11 to 15. It is named after Jijibhoy Dhunjibhay Irani, popularly known as `Jiji', who played for India against Douglas Jardine's legendary MCC side. At a press conference addressed jointly by the club's Vice-President Bomi Patel and cricket in charge Minoo Siganporia, President Rohinton Noria said teams from Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Surat, Nagpur and Hyderabad would compete in a 30-over-a-side league format on turf wickets at the Gymkhana and Railway Recreation Club (RRC) grounds. Piloo Reporter and Adil Palia from the BCCI's elite panel of umpires would officiate, he added. The event has been played at various centres on a rotation basis and now returns to the twin cities after 2002. Surat is the defending champion. The five-day meet will be inaugurated by Jiji's son, Dr Jamshed J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons and formerly Managing Director, Tata Steel at the Gymkhana Grounds on Thursday. State Labour Minister and President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), G. Vinod, will give away the prizes during the valedictory function on January 15 with former Test spinner and HCA Secretary Shivlal Yadav as guest of honour.
