Checked attempt by Congress to postpone MCD elections: Harsh Vardhan

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has termed the directive of the Delhi High Court to the Election Commission, the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to submit an affidavit stating on which dates the MCD elections would be completed along with the schedule of the election programme by January 25 as a major victory for the people of the Capital.

Dr. Vardhan said by moving the High Court his party had checked an attempt by the Congress to postpone the MCD elections. In a petition filed in the Delhi High Court, the BJP had submitted that the Congress wanted to postpone the MCD elections on the pretext of fresh delimitation of constituencies in the Capital.

The petition demanded that the Government, the MCD, Election Commission and the Lieutenant-Governor be directed to hold elections on time.

Terming the court direction in the matter as a victory of truth, justice and the public, the Delhi BJP president said the work on delimitation of seats for the MCD had been going on for five months. "While the Congress was silent on the issue till date, now when the time for holding the elections before April 7 had drawn close, it had found a new excuse to avoid the polls, as it fears defeat."

The introduction and passage of the MCD Amendment Bill, 2007, for increasing the number of MCD seats to a minimum of 272 and a maximum of 300 was a move in that direction, Dr. Vardhan charged, adding that the plan had approval of the Central Government.

Now, he said, the details of delimitation, reservation, seats for women, seats for Scheduled Castes, seats for Scheduled Castes women, schedule of dates for filing nomination, scrutiny of papers, withdrawal of names, allotment of election symbol, date of polling, date of counting and notification of the completion of the elections would have to be completed in accordance with the law and on time.
