Drive against Games Village

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Natural Heritage First -- a federation of several environmental non-government organisations and movements -- has launched "Yamuna Bachao Andolan" to demand that the Commonwealth Games Village not be allowed to come up on the banks of the Yamuna as it would do irreparable damage to the river basin.

In a statement, the coordinator of the Andolan, Kumar Onkareshwar, said the Yamuna was the lifeline for Delhi as it provides water to the city.

"Construction of the Commonwealth Village on the banks of the river will have an adverse impact on Delhi's temperature, rainfall and groundwater table."
