BHUBANESWAR: Showcasing culture, cuisine, crafts, handlooms and heritage, the second annual Ekamra Utsav kicked off in the city here on Wednesday. The 15-day festival aims at developing Bhubaneswar, known as Ekamra Kshetra in ancient times, as a favourite destination for tourists. Chief Secretary A.K. Tripathy inaugurated the festival at the sprawling exhibition grounds. In his address, Mr. Tripathy felt that handlooms had the highest employability potential in Orissa. He, however, regretted the dwindling popularity of the State's silk products in the international market. Speaking on the occasion, Tourism Secretary Parag Gupta pointed out that such festivals would enhance foreign exchange earnings for the State while giving a boost to revival of rural artisans. Textiles Secretary Anita Agnihotri said that the national handloom expo was being hosted in the city after a gap of three years with participation from nine states. Efforts were on to revitalise the State-owned Boyanika in its golden jubilee year, she added. Handicrafts Development Commissioner A.K. Shukla and Tourism Director S.K. Sarangi were also present.
Major attractions
The Mukteswar dance festival and folk dance festival, the two of the major segments of Ekamra Utsav, would get under way on January 14 and 18, respectively. In the last segment of the event, heritage walks would be conducted on January 20 and 21.
