CUTTACK: In a gruesome incident, at least 22 heads of cattle perished when a goods train hit them near Gurudijhatia railway station under Athgarh block of the district here on Tuesday. According to reports, the accident occurred when animals were crossing the track near Badapokhari village.
Engineer suspended
Cuttack district Collector Deoranjan Kumar Singh on Wednesday placed a junior engineer of Cuttack Sadar block under suspension following allegations of corruption against him. The junior engineer's wrongdoings came to light when some inhabitants of Eranch village petitioned the Governor during the latter's visit to the village on Tuesday.
Graft charge
The engineer allegedly demanded Rs. 20,000 from the villagers after sanctioning a project of Rs. one lakh under MPLAD funds. The villagers paid the amount. When the Governor arrived at the village to inaugurate the project, the villagers complained about the engineer's activities. The Governor asked the Collector to enquire into the matter and take appropriate action. After conducting an on-the-spot enquiry, Mr. Singh put the engineer under suspension.
