PATNA: The Bihar Government on Wednesday constituted a high-level taskforce headed by former Union Minister C P Thakur for eradication of kala-azar and malaria in the State by 2010. Talking to reporters after a high-level meeting held at the State secretariat here to review the steps taken by the State Health Department for eradication of kala-azar and malaria, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the State Government had decided to constitute the taskforce headed by Thakur, himself an eminent physician. The State Health Committee project director Udai Singh Kumawat would be a member of the task-force, which would also comprise experts of these diseases, he said. Admitting that the efforts made by the State Government for tackling the diseases were not appropriate so far, Mr. Kumar said mostly poor people particularly dalits were afflicted by the diseases. ``We are also taking help from the Centre and the NGOs for tackling kala-azar and malaria,'' he added. .- PTI
