A proclaimed offender in several cases in U.P. and Delhi

NEW DELHI: An alleged aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police in Mumbai. The accused, Ateek Ahmed, is a proclaimed offender wanted in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, riots, Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act registered in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said the inter-State gangster, Ateek Ahmed, who carried a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs on his head, was arrested near Meera Road in East Mumbai on Monday. The reward was announced by the U.P. police.

Mr. Kumar said Hazi Haider, an uncle of Dawood Ibrahim, took him to Mumbai and introduced him to the don in 1981. In 1982, he returned to Kanpur and continued with his criminal activities. Later, Ateek and his younger brother Bale fell out with their elder brother Safiq, who allegedly stabbed Bale. In June 1984, Ateek fired at Safiq but he managed to escape. But Sakir, a close associate of Safiq, was killed in the gun battle. Following the incident, Ateek fled to Delhi and kept a low profile for several months. In June 1994, the Crime Branch arrested him in connection with the murder of Sakir. He was shifted to Kanpur Jail and eventually released on bail.

In 1999, he was again arrested by the Delhi police in connection with an Arms Act case registered at the Timarpur police station and remained in jail here for 40 days. He was granted bail on April 24, 2001.

In April 2004, he along with his brother Rafiq and associates Sanjay Gupta and Wasim allegedly killed one Khurshid, a cousin of Shakir at Kanpur and fled to Lucknow. On August 18, 2004, he along with his brother Rafiq and other accomplices went to Heer Palace cinema hall in Kanpur to kill Rais and Topiwala, both members of the Nadir gang.

But the Special Task Force raided the place and a policeman and two members of Ateek's gang were killed in the encounter. After the incident, Ateek along with his associates fled to Lucknow. They also stayed in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

During interrogation, Ateek purportedly told the police that he was first arrested under an Arms Act case at Kanpur and was released after three days. It led to his entry into the world of crime and later he committed several robberies. He was arrested in 1973 and remained in Kanpur, Unnao, Fatehgarh and Lucknow jails for around eight months.
