KOLLAM: A ship arriving with 4,000 tonnes of logs from Myanmar late this month or early in February in Kollam will mark the commissioning of the Kollam Cargo Port. The Harbour Engineering Department has already finalised a deal in this connection with the Prabhat Group of Companies, the importers of the logs from Myanmar. The exact date of the formal inauguration of the Kollam Cargo Port will be taken on January 15 after a meeting with importers and exporters, mainly from the cashew sector. Minister for Ports M. Vijayakumar and Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan will attend the meeting. Those from the cashew sector here expressed their willingness to make use of the port. The meeting will decide on the facilities to be provided at the port. A final decision in this connection will be taken in consultation with the Customs Department. Facility for the functioning of a customs office is nearing completion. Shipping agents from Kochi and other parts of the country who inspected the port, the construction of which was completed, expressed interest in utilising the port. The port has a 116 m long wharf and a depth of 7 m. The depth can be increased to 10 m by dredging. Work on an approach road into the port area is also nearing completion. The port would enter into a deal with Wilson Shipping for the maiden export. The consignment for this is China clay. A consignment of around 15,000 tonnes of clay will be exported through the port. The Harbour Engineering Department will also enter into talks with the Indian Railways for a rail link to the port.
