`Action against extremist threat'

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that the Government will initiate stern action against forces trying to convert the State into a ``safe haven of extremist and communal elements.''

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Government was taking seriously the warning by the Central Intelligence wing that moves were on to make the State a ``safe haven'' of fundamentalist forces. The seizure of weapons at Cochin Port on Tuesday would be seen in the context of this warning, he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that the ongoing raids to unearth fake movie CDs would continue despite opposition from different quarters.

To a question on a recent article on emergence of individual worship in politics written by Purogamana Kalasahithya Sanghom secretary K.E.N. Kunhahammad and published in a Malayalam weekly, the Chief Minister said that ``communal and opportunists'' were trying to tarnish his image.

They were those who had even portrayed Onam as a Hindu festival (apparently a reference to an article by Mr. Kunhahammad). He said that his public recognition as a leader owed much to his participation in mass struggles and the organisation of workers and agricultural workers.

``I organised poor workers and farm workers and brought them to the frontline of mass struggle,'' he said adding that he had grown up leading political struggles for the people. The public, therefore, would pay no heed to articles such as the one appeared in the weekly, he said.
