CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has claimed that more than 1,300 of the 1,416 members took part in the general council meeting convened here on Wednesday. A majority of the members who could not attend informed him on phone that they would go by the decisions taken at the meeting. The "revolt" by senior leaders L. Ganesan and Gingee N.Ramachandran did not have an impact on the party, but only rejuvenated it, Mr.Vaiko told newsmen after the meeting. The general council members, who attended the meeting, gave a sworn affidavit expressing their loyalty to the party and his leadership. The entire proceedings were videographed. Six members who participated in the Salem meeting wanted to attend Wednesday's meeting, expressing regret for their action. They were not allowed to attend but were assured that their action would be condoned, he said. He alleged that despite the ruling party's attempts to prevent the general council members from attending the meeting, they participated in the deliberations. The "general council meeting" convened by Mr. Ganesan and Mr. Ramachandran in Salem recently was not attended by "genuine members," he said. The council ratified his earlier decision to remove both Mr. Ganesan and Mr. Ramachandran from the party posts. However, they were not expelled from the primary membership. Similarly Mr. Ganesan was not removed from the parliamentary leadership post. He hoped both of them would realise their "mistake" and express regret. The recent events, Mr. Vaiko said, had evoked sympathy among the people for the party, as they had understood that it was the "handiwork" of external forces. After the Pongal, he would tour the State, along with party headquarters secretaries, to explain to the people the decisions taken by the general council. Earlier, the general council adopted a resolution removing Mr. Ganesan and Mr. Ramachandran from the party posts.
