Coimbatore: To end unplanned growth of residential areas, the Local Planning Authority (LPA) has mooted 256 Detailed Development Plans (DDPs). Of them 98 will be for city areas.

According to the Joint Director of LPA, S.A. Balasubramanian, plans have been finalised with guidance from District Collector Neeraj Mittal to ensure that the growing suburbs are well-planned to withstand pressure in future.

In most of the developed city areas, there is no scope in terms of even elbowroom for any expansion or improvement. Hence, the initiative has come up to plan upcoming residential localities - leaving adequate utility space - in the abutting local bodies especially municipalities and town panchayats.

The DDPs would carefully chart the residential areas, leaving space for parks, schools, public utility areas such as children play area, shopping complex and hospitals.

Grabbing the opportunity, City Municipal Commissioner P. Muthuveeran has mooted proposals to decongest city areas by forming scheme roads. Other local bodies in the fringe areas are following suit, he said. The plans would be mooted and processed by the LPA, besides providing funds. The local bodies would execute the works, Mr. Balasubramanian said.

To begin with, the LPA has mooted three scheme roads varying from a minimum of 40 feet to 100 feet in width. Avoiding the need for acquiring more lands, the width of the road would be linked to land availability.

One road would be from Avanashi Road near CODISSIA to link Sathyamangalam Road near the Food Corporation of India premises, the second road would be from Sathyamangalam Road to join Mettuppalayam Road at Nallampalayam and the third road would be from Avanashi Road to Tiruchi Road near Ranga Vilas Mills along the canal. These three roads would help decongest the city roads.

To bring in greenery and lung space amid the concrete jungle, the LPA had enhanced the quantum of subsidy for setting up parks to 100 per cent. The entire cost of Rs 2.5 lakh would be provided by the LPA.

These parks would provide walking and relaxing space for all age groups, especially children and senior citizens. The Corporation has given four proposals while nearly half-a-dozen local bodies have given proposals for one each.
