From a shy person to a sought-after hero

S.R.Ashok Kumar

"I take criticism in the right spirit as I feel most of the critics are right. But I would like to follow my own instinct"

Dhanush

Actor Dhanush started his film career with a bang. Each film helped him climb up the career ladder. The fact that he did some very good films with the best directors certainly helped. Now he can claim to be a sought-after hero in Tamil film industry. Dhanush reveals his happy state of mind as also his personal life.

I am normally a shy person. But also a workaholic. However when not working, I like to stay with my family.

In 2000, I stood in front of the camera for `Thulluvatho Ilamai.' The first shot was cranked at a beach house on East Coast Road. What I spoke that day never appeared in the film.

Initially, I was not interested in acting. All I wished was to own a 3-bedroom flat, an Indica car and a job which can get me Rs.25,000 a month. I must thank God for being very generous towards me.

My first film hit the theatres only in 2002. In four years I have done 10 films. I am happy that a majority of them were hits and till today I have not done any other language films except Tamil.

Best among them are `Athu Oru Kanakkalam,' `Puthupettai' and `Thiruvilaiyadal Arambam.' For `Thiruvilaiyadal Arambam' I heard the story only for about 20 minutes and I liked it. Eight days later I was acting in the movie. Two persons were very confident about the success of the film. One was I and the other director Bhoopathi Pandian. We knew it would be a hit but not such a big hit. The director wanted a song like `Ennama Kannu' (which played in Mr. Bharath featuring Rajinkanth and Satyaraj). But the director was unable to get it. So we went for a remix.

Here too, I was hesitant to do the scene, but the director convinced me. He was right. Rajinikanth really liked the film and he praised my work.

My favourite actors are Al Pacino, Rajnikanth and Sean Penn. Among women stars, it is Meg Ryan, Demi Moore and our own Simran. The best compliment I got till day is the one said by Balu Mahendra. "After Kamal Haasan and Mammooty it is Dhanush who can hold on a close-up for more time and at any level." I consider it the best ever compliment I have received.

I have a passion for direction though I must not jump into that field now. I need to learn more by working with some of the best directors. But on no account I will make the producer lose money as a director.

I take criticism in the right spriit as I feel most of the critics are right. But I would like to follow my own instinct.

I am now doing `Parattai Engira Azhagusundaram', then I will be doing another film with director Vettrimaran and then it is going to be one with Gautham Menon.

My only regret is I do not get to spend more time with my family — particularly Aiswarya and my child Yathra.
