Chennai: Reuse and recycle paper. Trees are our friends. Save Water. Avoid using polythene. Save electricity. Keep your neighbourhood clean. These were the points that the Scope International has worked on to produce a colourful booklet to be distributed to schoolchildren in Tamil Nadu. Lord Turner, non-executive director, Standard Chartered Bank, launched the booklet at the RKM Sarada Vidyalaya Model Higher Secondary School for Girls in T. Nagar.
Key issue
K.S. Neelakantan, Director of Environment, received the first copy. He said environmental concern was a key issue for Standard Chartered and their focus was on global warming. As part of the conservation measures, the bank uses printers with double side printing capabilities, recycling of waste, paper and water, eco-bags instead of plastics and also working with retailers to provide eco-friendly shopping bags in the place of plastics.
Exhibition
An exhibition of models explaining environmental conservation themes was held on the occasion Mr. Neelakantan said thoughtless environmental abuse has assumed alarming proportions and the need of the hour was to be proactive. He said it was essential to sensitise children to the reality in their formative years. The booklets will be distributed free of cost to all primary schoolchildren in Tamil Nadu by the end of January. Shashi Ravichandran, head, Corporate Affairs, Scope International, proposed a vote of thanks. Prizes were given away to E. Yashoda, D. Ajithkumar and R. Umesh Naveen, for winning the first three prizes in the drawing competition organised by Scope International.
