Freed fishermen reach Wagah

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Guards manning the Wagah border reopened the gates hours after the ceremonial sundown closure on Wednesday to allow 115 fishermen released from Pakistani prisons to cross over into India.

Officials here said the fishermen crossed the border around 8 p.m. They were released from Landhi jail in Karachi on Tuesday as a goodwill gesture ahead of the visit by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

They were bussed to the border. The journey takes 24 hours, but it took longer this time because the vehicle broke down.
