Kumaraswamy orders suspension of work on Nagarjuna project

    Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday ordered suspension of work on the 1000 MW Nagarjuna Power Project pending a Government-sponsored study by elected representatives of the region.

    At a meeting with legislators, fishermen representatives and environmentalists of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts here, the Chief Minister agreed to the demand for a temporary stay on the construction of the project to sort out the misgivings among the people and elected representatives of the region.

    The Chief Minister said the work would be suspended for a week during which time the legislators could go on a study tour of the 1000 MW Simhadri Thermal Power Plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation near Visakhapatnam.

    Others present at the meeting included Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna; Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya; Minister for Fisheries B. Nagaraj Shetty and legislators Yogish Bhat, Raghupathi Bhat, Shakuntala Shetty and Abhayachandra Jain.

    The Chief Minister said irrespective of political affiliations it should be the endeavour of the elected representatives to cooperate with the Government in the commissioning of development projects.

    The "National Highway 17 bandh" called by the Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on January 13 has been postponed.

    This decision was taken after a delegation of the Samiti met the Chief Minister on Wednesday.
