KOCHI: The Union Government is planning to launch a `Mission Mode' project on e-governance in municipalities. This was announced by M. Ramachandran, Secretary, Union Ministry of Urban Development, in the valedictory address at the 55th National Town and Country Planners Congress here on Wednesday. He said the project, covering 423 first class cities with over one lakh population, would improve internal government operations to support and stimulate good governance. Eight services of municipalities would be covered under the scheme. This would give easy access to municipal services, hassle-free payment of municipal taxes and user charges, quick redressal of grievances and access to various information from municipalities. In Kerala, five towns - Alappuzha, Kollam, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Thrissur - were identified for urban mapping and Kochi for utility mapping. The Union Government's share of Rs.147.56 lakh had been released for Kerala to the Survey of India, the mapping agency. Once the State share of Rs.49.19 lakh was released, mapping would be taken up by the agency, he said. The Union Government had launched the National Urban Information System (NUIS) scheme to develop GIS databases for 137 towns in the country.
