BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday said that the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) would allot two lakh sites this year.

He was speaking at a function organised by Adarsha Autorickshaw Drivers' Association where some drivers were felicitated.

The Chief Minister said the Government would issue a direction to the BDA in this regard. Mr. Kumaraswamy said 10 per cent of the allotments would be earmarked for the poor and autorickshaw drivers could benefit from it.

However, the Government was not in favour of directly allotting sites to these sections and was instead planning to build apartments on the sites and distribute them.

He said the scheme was being thought of as the poor and autorickshaw drivers would not be able to buy sites and build houses.

Even the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) and other agencies taking up construction of houses would be asked to earmark 10 per cent of the area to be allotted for building apartments and selling them to the poor.

Mr. Kumaraswamy hinted that the schemes might be announced to mark the completion of one year in office of his Government on February 3.

He would ensure that the assurances given by him were implemented. "I will not let them remain assurances," he said.

He also promised that the scheme to provide relief of Rs. 50,000 each to the autorickshaw drivers in the event of their death, started by his father, H.D. Deve Gowda, when he was Chief Minister, would be revived soon.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said his Government was for the uplift of the labour class.

Earlier, B.S. Narayana Murthy, general secretary of the association, demanded health cover under Yeshaswini scheme or through the Government's ESI hospitals; green cards to all licensed drivers; constitution of a welfare board for the unorganised sector and allotment of 20 x 30 ft sites.

The Chief Minister promised that these would be considered.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok and Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar were present.
