BANGALORE: Sleuths of the anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched the residence and office of a Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) official here and found that he and his wife owned 17 flats in Bangalore and a house in Kerala.

The assets were disproportionate to the known sources of income of K.P. Mohan Kumar, who works as Technical Officer Grade "C" at GTRE in Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) here. His wife Bindu Mohan had abetted and aided him in acquiring the property, a press release from the CBI said on Thursday.

During the search at Mr. Kumar's house in DRDO Township in C.V. Raman Nagar, the CBI team found that he and his wife possessed Rs. 3.40 lakh in cash and three high-end cars, and had fixed deposits of Rs. 45 lakh.

Three hundred gm of gold jewellery was found in a joint locker they operated at HDFC Bank's Airport Road branch.

The CBI team also found documents relating to huge cash the couple had in various bank accounts, the release said.

The officials found details pertaining to 17 flats the couple owned in Bangalore and a house in Kerala. Some "incriminating" documents were also seized, the release said.

The searches were conducted on January 8 as a sequel to a criminal case that was registered against Mr. Kumar and Ms. Bindu on December 28, 2006 under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The charge against Mr. Kumar was that he had acquired assets worth Rs. 58.18 lakh, disproportionate to his known sources of income, during September 1996 to November 2006, the release added.
