DINDIGUL: Elaborate arrangements have been made for distribution of free gas stoves along with gas connection to the poor in the district. A total of 9,487 beneficiaries would get them before March 15. In the first phase, gas connection would be given to 1,000 beneficiaries before Pongal festival, said Collector R. Vasuki. Inspecting gas stoves that were stocked in one of the godowns owned by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Limited near Murugabavanam here on Thursday, she said the gas stoves would be dispatched to respective taluks in a day or two. The total expenditure for this scheme was put at Rs.1.79 crore; the cost of 1,000 gas stoves was Rs.9.40 lakh and the deposit for 1,000 gas connections was Rs.9.50 lakh, she said. In the first phase, 381 beneficiaries would get free gas connections in Dindigul, 129 in Kodaikanal, 113 in Oddanchatram, 100 each in Natham, Nilakottai and Palani, and 77 in Vedasandur taluks.
Must pay for gas
A total of 5,000 beneficiaries would get gas connections before January 20 2,500 beneficiaries before February 20, and the rest before March 15. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum Corporations would supply gas to them. The beneficiaries have to pay for the supply of gas, the Collector said. Formal distribution of stoves would commence at D. Pudhupatti in Reddiyarchatram union and Navakani in Oddanchatram union on January 14, a day before the Pongal festival.
Committees formed
Meanwhile, 16 committees would deliver gas stoves at the doorstep of beneficiaries at the other places the same day. Zonal officers in the rank of Deputy Collector would monitor implementation of the scheme in the respective taluks. A committee comprising panchayat president, ward member, village administrative officer, school headmaster and social worker had identified the beneficiaries, said Ms. Vasuki.
