BANGALORE: Students of a Kannada higher secondary school in Banashankari 1st Stage fell ill after having their free midday meal on Thursday afternoon. The students were treated in Shekar Hospital near Basavanagudi and were discharged.

The students of Gokulam Garden Kannada Higher Secondary School were regularly served food by Adamya Chetana under the State Government's midday meal scheme. But on Thursday, the school authorities asked Adamya Chetana not to supply food because K. Raju, a resident of Srinivasanagar, wanted to feed the children on the death anniversary of his 15-year-old daughter Manya. "Our teacher had asked us not to bring lunch box," said Archana, studying in 8th standard.

Archana said she and other students were given "masala rice" and Vada. "After some time I threw up," she said. She along with 10 others were brought to Shekar Hospital. The children were given I.V. Fluids and antibiotics. "The ten students have recovered and will be discharged in the night," a doctor said. Tablets were given to 60 students in the out patient department, the doctor added. At the hospital the school management and Mr. Raju faced the ire of the parents.

There were heated exchanges between the school management and reporters. In a press release, Mr. Raju said the event was organised in memory of his daughter who died of heart attack. Food poisoning was an accident, he said.
