TIRUCHI: Literary Associations and writers have hailed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for donating Rs. 1 crore out of his personal funds to honour five writers saying it would go a long way in encouraging writers to bring out more quality books. The Executive Committee member of the Sahitya Akademy, R. Balachandran `Bala', termed the Chief Minister's announcement on Wednesday and pragmatic action of handing over the cheque on the very next day "a landmark decision of magnificence and magnanimity." The gesture has really brought cheers to the publishing community as well as the writers. Dr. Bala said that the Chief Minister, himself a poet, fiction writer, film lyricist commentator of classical literature and script-writer of long standing and wide readership, has identified himself with the community of writers with the splendid gesture. The president of the Tiruchi District Publishers and Book Sellers Association, `Agasthiar' S. Gopalakrishnan and its secretary, Kaladeeswaran, in a statement said it is a golden period for the writers. The amount would pave way for improving the quality of writing and publication of more quality books.
Great boon
The president of the Pudukottai town unit of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers' Association, Thangam Moorthi, said the Chief Minister's gesture was a great boon to the entire writing community. Writers have always been playing a great role in the uplift of the society as a whole and the cash reward every year would be a key-factor in producing quality writers. The president of the Pudukottai Ilakkiya Peravai, M. Muthusrinivasan said writers are in dire need for financial support and many good works have not been brought to the fore due paucity of funds. Himself a writer of top order, the Chief Minister, has come out with this commendable gesture understanding the plight of the writers. This would make whole difference in promoting quality writings, Mr. Muthusrinivasan added.
