`TDP, TRS spreading misconceptions'

Staff Reporter

Political parties are instigating water disputes for gaining political mileage, says CPI

ANANTAPUR: State president of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham K. Ramakrishna and district secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) M.V. Ramana have alleged that a few political parties and politicians have been instigating water disputes unnecessarily for gaining political mileage.

Talking to newspersons here on Friday, they mentioned that all projects based on surplus waters of the Krishna like Telugu Ganga, Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari, SRBC, Veligonda, Klawakurthy and others were taken up during the regimes of N.T. Rama Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu. Nobody had raised any objection then, but every body was talking about Pothireddypadu, on which most of these projects were depending. The Telugu Ganga and SRBC projects had allocated waters of 15 and 19 TMC ft. respectively and water from Pothireddypadu head regulator to these and few other projects would be drawn from the water level of 854 ft. in Srisailam reservoir. At the same time, water for Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme was designed to be drawn from 802 ft., but nobody was talking about it.

Congress leaders like `Hyderabad Brothers' and leaders of the TDP and the TRS were also instigating regional differences in the name of water disputes by spreading misconceptions, the CPI leaders alleged. The CPI leaders urged the TDP to introspect on Pothireddypadu issue by involving leaders like Ch. Rajeswara Rao and M.V. Mysoora Reddy instead of pulling the issue in different directions. They also criticised the amendments made to the Act 9 of 1977 allowing the Government to reclaim the occupied assignment lands and utilising them for other purposes. But, as per the Act such reclaimed lands should be allotted to the original allottees or their heirs, they noted. The State Government had already notified lands for reclaim in 54 mandals of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Medak and Mahabubnagar in the backdrop of the amendments to the 1977 Act. They also demanded an all-party meet and a white paper on the lands issue.
