`Media is losing credibility'

Staff Correspondent

Need for good writing skills to be a good journalist stressed

RIGHT BEGINNING: Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa inaugurating the symposium on "Emerging Trends in Reporting" in Hubli on Friday.

HUBLI: Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa has said corporate culture has entered the field of journalism degenerating the values in the field.

Inaugurating the two-day workshop on "Emerging Trends in Reporting" organised by Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Research, he underscored the need for having a look into the whole issue and take remedial measures immediately.

The media is losing its credibility owing to many factors creating a negative impact. Young journalists should take these developments seriously. If ignored it is going to cast an adverse impact in the long run, Mr. Puttappa said.

Highlighting the importance of writing skills, he called on budding journalists to use writing skills for the good and not for destructive purposes or for fulfilling vested interests.

The main objective of writing should be public interest, he averred.

Delivering the keynote address at the symposium, senior journalist M. Madanmohan said those who want to enter the field of journalism should first know the basics of reporting.

Reporting is the foundation of any newspaper and if reporting is weak, then it will be a threat to the very existence of the newspaper, he observed.

Sound advice

He advised youngsters not to choose journalism for the glamour. Being a journalist is a tough job and one needs to do hard work to become a good journalist, he said. While writing on any subject one should have an in depth understanding of the issue, should analyse it properly and should file a balanced story.

And for that to happen one should have good writing skills. M. Gangadharappa, head, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Karnatak University, Khatavakar, Vinay Mahendrakar, Nayana Gangadharappa and others were present during the inaugural session.
