EC publishes electoral rolls

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Preparing ground for the constitution of the Legislative Council for the State, the Election Commission (EC) on Friday published the electoral rolls, covering the graduates' and teachers' constituencies.

Going by initial feedback, Chief Electoral Officer V. Bhaskar said the enrolment by graduates as voters was not at the expected level. He said, the graduate and teacher voters would elect eight members each for the Council.

While the Council would have 90 members in total, 31 of them would be elected each by Assembly and local body members. Twelve others would be nominated by the Government.

Startling revelations

The published electoral rolls provided startling revelations. Only 12,59,899 out of an estimated 30 lakhs of graduates in the State, have enrolled themselves as voters in the eight graduates constituencies for the Council elections.

Those who enrolled themselves from among the teachers for the eight teachers' constituencies numbered only 1,14,171. Among the eight graduates constituencies, the one constituted with Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar topped with 2,20,971 enrolments followed by that of Krishna and Guntur districts (1,87,972 enrolments). That of East and West Godavari ranked third (1,73,783). With respect to teachers' constituencies, the largest number of teachers registered themselves as voters in the constituency formed with Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda --16,962. The one formed with Medak Nizambad, Adilabad and Karimnagar emerged second (15,696) and that of Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor third (14,638).
