Allow States to fix quota, says Vaiko

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The power to fix reservation quota in jobs and educational institutions should rest with State governments and the Constitution has to be amended to allow this, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said in a press release on Friday, in response to the Supreme Court's ruling that Schedule IX laws were subject to judicial review.

The Tamil Nadu Reservation Act providing for 69 percent reservation falls under the said schedule. Reservations were necessary to protect social justice and the DMK Government had failed to safeguard this, despite being part of the Central Government, Mr. Vaiko added.

The Centre will take steps to protect the interests of the underprivileged, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasamy said.
