Power: Manmohan's intervention sought

The Chief Minister wants unallocated power from Central units for the State

NEW DELHI: Faced with a severe power crisis in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in getting unallocated power from Central units, reports PTI. He urged Dr. Manmohan Singh to increase the State's share, which is presently 180 MW. He met Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in this regard on Thursday.

The Prime Minister responded positively to the request, he said. Replying to a query by reporters, Dr. Reddy said he did not discuss the appointment of a second States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) to go into the ticklish issue of creation of smaller states.

On the Supreme Court judgement on Ninth Schedule, Dr. Reddy parried a direct reply saying that he would consult legal experts. The apex court judgement is expected to impact the Reddy Government's decision to provide reservation to Muslims.

He thanked Dr. Singh for sanctioning an IIT to the State and approving a special package to attract semi-conductor companies to set up Fab units. SemIndia has signed an MoU with global chip major AMD and Flextronics invloving a total investment of three billion dollars for a proposed semi-conductor fabrication facility in Hyderabad.

Political briefing

Hyderabad Special Correspondent adds: Dr. Reddy briefed the Prime Minister about the political situation in the State and various developmental projects being implemented by the State Government.

The Chief Minister told reporters that the IIT would not be set up at Basar. He criticised opposition parties for politicising the surrender of assigned lands to the Government.

Dr. Reddy also met Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and sought higher allocation for the housing sector and pleaded for inclusion of more districts under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.
