SALEM: The Salem Corporation will launch a drive against unauthorised hoardings in the city after Pongal, Commissioner A.M. Selvam has said. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the Commissioner said that over 300 hoardings in the city were found erected without obtaining proper permission from the authorities. Many of these hoardings were found causing inconvenience to road users and a few of them were erected on the space belonged to the Government. "The owners of such hoardings should remove them immediately. If they failed to do so, the civic administration would remove the hoardings and collect the expenses from the owners," he said. To erect hoardings in the city limit, permission should be obtained from the district administration after getting no objection certificate from the Corporation, he added. Mr. Selvam warned that stringent action would be taken against those burning tyres, plastic and rubber materials during the Bhogi festival. A few people were setting these materials afire for the sake of fun, polluting the environment. Calling for smokeless Bhogi celebrations, he said, "The civic body will keep a watch and take severe action against those found burning such materials," he said. The Commissioner said that steps would be taken to bring an end to the pig menace in the city. As a large number of people were complaining about the growing pig menace, the civic body had decided to remove the pigs. The exercise would begin after Pongal. All the Corporation offices would be decorated to celebrate Samathuva Pongal, Mr. Selvam said.
