Gallery on freedom struggle opens

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Amid playing of the popular patriotic song "Aye mere watan ke logo zara aankho mein bhar lo paani, jo shaheed hue hain unki zara yaad karo qurbaani... .'' Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S.F. Rodrigues on Saturday inaugurated a permanent gallery of "India's Struggle for Freedom: Visuals and Documents" at the renovated National Gallery of Portraits in Sector 17 here. The gallery, dedicated to the memory of freedom fighters, has been created by the Government Museum and Art Gallery with technical support from Malwinder Jeet Singh Waraich, formerly Professor at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, who has collected the documents and photographs from surviving revolutionaries and families of martyrs.

General Rodrigues went round the exhibits that offer a glimpse of the reawakening of India from the time of the first War of Independence of 1857 to the achievement of freedom in 1947. He appreciated all the 41 well-researched and computer-generated photo and document panels collected from various research organisations, institutions and archives.

The Governor emphasised the need for developing a sense of history and inquisitiveness among the younger generation and widening their vision through such exhibitions. He regretted that people were ignorant about "our glorious history and our national culture''.

In his comments in the visitors' book, he wrote: "This is a humbling experience. When will we be worthy of the sacrifices our country and people made through the years?''

Among those present were Union Territory Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, Deputy Commissioner R.K. Rao, eminent educationists and art lovers.
