Audio guide facility at Mamallapuram

CHENNAI: The Union Tourism Ministry has released the first instalment of Rs.39.62 lakh for introduction of audio guide facility at Mamallapuram. The second instalment of Rs.4.40 lakh will be released on successful commissioning of the project and submission of utilisation certificate. An equal amount of the Tamil Nadu Government's share has also been sanctioned.

As a follow-up, the Commissioner of Tourism has entrusted the installation of the Audio Guide facility at Mamallapuram with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).

Giving details of the project, the State Tourism and Culture Secretary, V. Irai Anbu, told The Hindu that the new audio guide facility would be made available at the Shore Temple and Five Rathas. The TTDC will execute the project through the ELCOT. While the TTDC is the executing agency, the Commissioner of Tourism would monitor the progress of the work and send the status of the project work to the Union Tourism Ministry.

Similar audio guide facilities would also be installed at Sri Brahadisvara Temple, Thanjavur, Sri Brahadisvara Temple, Gangaikondacholapuram, and Sri Iravadeeswara Temple, Darasuram, at a total cost of Rs.61.46 lakh. As part of the Government's efforts to boost eco-tourism, the Union Tourism Ministry has approved a revised proposal for Rs.42.50 lakh and accorded permission to execute the work for setting up an Eco Friendly Bird Centre at Rameswaram. The project would be executed by the District Collector, Ramanathapuram, through the Centre for Environment Education.
