CHENNAI: Police image can be improved by transparency, utility, impartiality and also smartness. Without compromising on security, things should be done to the extent possible and feasible openly, Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said on Saturday.

Declaring open the 50th All India Police Duty Meet here, Mr. Barnala pointed out that police could explain to the public any matter that affected them. Also, they could develop a good relationship with law-abiding citizens.

Justice and fair play should be the police officers' watchword. Senior police officers should listen to the genuine grievances of juniors. Police should understand the changes sweeping the society. They owed a duty to themselves as a group and to the public. "Self-introspection is the best method for self-improvement."

The Governor said police work could be improved functionally by strengthening communication facilities and scientifically by introducing systemic analysis. The latest scientific developments should be used in crime detection and prompt tracing of criminals.

Amid the firing of crackers, Mr. Barnala released a set of balloons to mark the duty meet open. He also released a giant balloon. The Governor took the salute at an impressive march past by the participating teams. The Director General of Police, D. Mukherjee, who received the first copy of a souvenir released by the Governor, said the duty meet provided an excellent opportunity for all policemen to display their professional skills. The organising secretary, K.Thukkaiandi, Tamil Nadu Inspector General of Police, Crime, also spoke.
