Incentive for Aavin employees

CHENNAI: After a gap of five years, the Aavin employees are to get their annual performance incentive this year.

An official press release said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has announced the payment of the incentive, which was stopped five years ago, on the eve of Pongal.

As per the order, employees who had worked for up to 90 days in the year 2006 would get Rs. 120, while those who had worked up to 150 days would get Rs. 200. The incentive would be Rs. 330 for those who worked up to 200 days, whereas those who had put in more than 200 days of attendance would get Rs. 825 each.

A total of 7,700 employees would be benefited by the announcement, the release said, adding that it would cost the Government Rs. 64 lakh. — Special Correspondent

DA merger with basic pay

CHENNAI: The State Government has announced 50 per cent merger of dearness allowance with the basic pay for the employees of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. About 10,400 employees will be benefited by the Government's decision, according to an official press release. — Special Correspondent

Welfare board for village priests

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has cleared the proposal to constitute a welfare board for village priests in the State. An official press release said the consent was given on Saturday.

The Board is a social security measure for priests of village temples not coming under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department, it said. — Special Correspondent

Global meet on early Christianity in India

CHENNAI: Wilbert Rosin, Past President of Concordia College, on Saturday inaugurated a four-day international conference on the history of early Christianity in India with parallel developments in other parts of Asia at the Institute of Asian Studies, Chemmancherry, Sholinganallur.

According to John Samuel, Coordinator of the Conference, national and international delegates would provide an Asian perspective on the early Christianity. The meet would also delve at length into the origin of Christianity in India, the two traditions--the Malabar and the Coromandal--and the impact on Indian religious traditions. The meeting has been organised to collect data for analysis of the early Indian Christianity with a comparative perspective from various parts of Asia. The conference is hosted by the International Centre for the Study of Christianity in India (ICSCI). A guard of honour and a band was played by the students of Vidyodaya Academy. — Special Correspondent

SFI's appeal to Government

CHENNAI: The Students Federation of India has appealed to the State Government to take immediate action to stop the sale of textbooks supplied under the free textbook scheme in the black market. Unscrupulous dealers were selling the textbooks to students and refusing to issue receipts for the sale, the SFI said in a press release on Friday. — Special Correspondent

Three child labourers rescued

ERODE: The Labour Welfare Department rescued three child labourers employed in business establishments here on Friday. According to a release, officials conducted an intensive raid on 123 business establishments in Erode town and found three children below 14 employed in some establishments. The officials rescued them and registered cases against the firms that employed them. - Staff Reporter

Pension adalat

ERODE: A regional level pension adalat of western region will be conducted on January 25 at the regional office in Coimbatore.

People can forward their grievances and representations, if any, regarding unsettled pension cases in the divisional level to Postmaster General, Western Region, Coimbatore - 641 002 on or before January 15 by post or in person.

Tap latent talent: MP

Nagercoil: A.V. Bellarmine, the member of Lok Sabha, has urged the volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) to explore the ways and means to expose the hidden talents of younger generation. Distributing prizes to those who won various competitions organised by the NYK in connection with the Vivekanandar birth anniversary on Friday at the Government primary school at Kaniyankulam, he urged the teaching community to mould characters of younger generation in such a way that they inculcate a tendency to render service for the betterment of the society. The co-ordinator of NYK, Senthil Kumar, also spoke. — Staff Reporter

Free LPG connections

PERAMBALUR: A total of 7,326 persons belonging to economically weaker sections will get free LPG connection and gas stoves during the first phase of the programme in the district.

A press release issued here on Saturday said that 5,651 beneficiaries were identified in rural areas and 1,675 in urban areas. An awareness programme on safety aspects while handling cylinders and stoves was conducted.

Union Minister for Environment and Forests A. Raja would inaugurate the scheme on Sunday.

Training programme

PUDUKOTTAI: A training programme on increasing coconut yield will be held under the auspices of Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Vamban Colony near here on January 23.

A press release said that coconut growers would be trained on the use of low-cost coconut tonic through root feeding method. The tonic was made by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and contained growth-promoting substances. Deficiency in micronutrient and shedding of nuts often resulted in susceptibility to pest attack and the tonic would eliminate the problem, the release added.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 93.63 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 719 cusecs and the discharge, 8,010 cusecs. - Staff Reporter
