BANGALORE: S. Christopher has been appointed director of the Centre for Airborne Systems of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with effect from January 1.

He is the Programme Director of the Airborne Early Warning and Control System programme. — Staff Reporter

Deve Gowda hails verdict on Afzal

HASSAN: The former Prime Minister and Hassan MP, H.D. Deve Gowda, on Friday supported the decision of the Supreme Court in dismissing the curative petition filed by Afzal Guru, who has been convicted in Parliament attack case. He told The Hindu at the Government Guest House here that Afzal had committed a crime and he should be punished. Mr. Deve Gowda, who visited Gorur, 17 km from Hassan where he performed special puja at Yoga Narasimha temple at 5 a.m., said he welcomed Supreme Court judgment that upheld the expulsion of 12 MPs in the "cash-for-query scam".

He refused to comment the ruling on IX Schedule of Constitution. — Staff Correspondent

Resignation accepted

Bangalore: The resignation of Dakshina Kannada district Janata Dal (S) president K. Vasant Bangera has been accepted by party State president M.P. Prakash.

In a release on Friday, party spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta said party's Dakshina Kannada district working president K.B. Balaraj has been asked to execute the responsibility of the president till the appointment of new president. — Special Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad, on Saturday announced the results of M.A. Marathi first, second and third semester examinations held during December 2006, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Award

HUBLI: "Kannada Kashaya", written by senior journalist Ishwar Daitota has been selected for the award instituted by Kannada Kriya Samiti of the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation in the name of late Rama Jadhav. The award would be conferred during the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations to be held in Gadag on January 16, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: The Dharwad Zilla Karyanirata Patrakatrara Sangha has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner here on Friday seeking action against persons making threatening calls to a few journalists. — Staff Correspondent

Congratulated

Sirsi: M. Hariprasad Horale and Shreenivas G. Hegde Bannige, a team of two students from the Shri Kalika Bhavani Secondary School, Kansur in Siddapur taluk, have won the second place (in Rural Division) at the State-level Science Quiz Competition - 2007 for secondary school students held in Bangalore on January 10. The prize comprised a citation, memento and a cash prize of Rs. 7,500.

DDPI G.S. Naik, BEO D.R. Naik and SKB Education Societies president D.V. Hegde and headmaster and staff of the school have congratulated the students on their success.

Eye camp

HASSAN: The District Blindness Control Society (DBCS), along with the District Health Office, CSI Mission Hospital, Keshava Nethralaya, Rotary, Vasavamba Sunder Raj Shetty Trust of Arsikere and Lion's West Trust, Holenarsipur, will conduct a free eye camp for school students on January 22 to January 25. The programme will include eye tests, cataract operations and fixing of lens. — Staff Correspondent

Compensation

HASSAN: Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda said here on Saturday that compensation had been paid to 19 families whose breadwinners had died after consuming spurious arrack. Minister for Public Works H.D. Revanna distributed cheques of Rs. 1 lakh each to five people on Friday. For the 14 others, cheques had already been distributed, he said. He said that two of the deaths had been from Hassan, 12 from Sakleshpur and five from Chennaraypatna. The compensation was released from the Chief Minister's relief fund. — Staff Correspondent

Officials suspended

DAVANGERE: Two engineers of the Irrigation Department of Malebennur division have been kept under suspension for not supervising the Bhadra canal modernisation works properly, said Minister for Sugar S.A. Ravindranath. The Minister, who along with some presspersons had examined the works some days ago, was reportedly unhappy over their quality at a few places in Malebennur sub-division. He had complained to Irrigation Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, who in turn asked the Chief Engineer of the Bhadra reservoir project and other senior officials of the Irrigation Department to visit the spots and see whether works were being executed properly. — Staff Correspondent
