Chennai enters final in style

Sattur: Defending champion Chennai entered the final of the 48th State senior inter-district football championship with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Coimbatore at Sattur on Saturday.

Chennai attacked strongly from the start and scored three goals within 22 minutes. Coimbatore could never settle down, as Chennai scored at will. The margin of victory could have been bigger had Chennai not taken things easy in the second session.

Rajkumar opened the account in the 10th minute off a pass from Umesh. Amala Francis Noa scored the second off a spot-kick in the 18th minute. Umesh netted the third with a solo effort in the 22nd minute. Ilamurugan volleyed a cross from Rajkumar from the left in the 46th minute, for the fourth goal. Noa completed the tally in the 76th minute through a solo effort.

Armed Police triumphs

Tamil Nadu Armed Police (Chennai) won the TNEB Trophy defeating host TNEB 83-80 in the last match of the semifinal round-robin league in the tenth annual invitation basketball tournament at Tuticorin on Saturday.

Armed Police emerged winner with an all-win record, while host TNEB finished runner-up with two wins and a loss.

The results: TN Armed Police 83 (Rajendran 17, Robinson 19) bt TNEB 80 (Sivakumar 21, Ravi 29); Tuticorin Port SC 62 (Murugaraj 20, Senthil 15) bt Dyaneswaran Academy 51 (Mohan Kumar 16, Balavan 14).

Srivardhan sizzles

G. Srivaradhan's century helped Coimbatore defeat Theni by 125 runs in the ICL-Mahavir Chand memorial trophy inter-district under-13 cricket tournament, organised by Tirunelveli DCA, at Tirunelveli on Saturday.

The scores:

Coimbatore 232 for six in 30 overs (G. Srivaradhan 113, S. Kaarthi 54, Selvandran three for 42) bt Theni 107 for nine in 30 overs (S. Kaarthi four for 18).

Thanjavur 25 in 9.5 overs (S. Raj Kumar six for eight) lost to Pudukottai 26 for one in 8.3 overs.

Sivagangai 65 in 19.4 overs (R. Saravanan three for five, K. Kamal four for 14) lost to Pondicherry 66 for five in 13.3 overs (P. Adaikala Prabhu Deva three for 19).

Dindigul 89 in 24.1 overs (Kumaran four for 19) lost to Nagapattinam 90 for two in 18.3 overs (A. Karthick 32 not out).

Madurai 139 for seven in 30 overs (S. Shanmuga Bharath 37) bt Vellore 86 for six in 30 overs (N.S. Venkat 35).

Tiruvannamalai 57 in 22 overs (Kamala Kannan three for 14, Hari Krish three for six) lost to Kancheepuram 58 for one in 17.1 overs.

Krishnagiri 66 in 19.2 overs (K. Diwakar Pandian four for 12) lost to Kanyakumari 67 for six in 25.4 overs.

Tirunelveli posts wins

Host Tirunelveli registered two wins in group `C' (league) in the men's section in the senior inter-district volleyball championship at VOC Stadium, Palayamkottai on Saturday.

Other results: Men: Group A: Madurai bt Dindigul 25-17, 25-16; Coimbatore bt Tuticorin 25-18, 20-25, 25-23; Group B: Kancheepuram bt Cuddalore 25-21, 25-20; Group C: Tirunelveli bt Tiruvallur 25-19, 25-20; Tirunelveli bt Tiruvannamalai 16-25, 25-20, 15-21; Group D: Salem bt Chennai 15-25, 26-24, 25-20; Trichy bt Kanyakumari 25-14, 25-20.

Silver Jubilee SC (Periakulam) beat Thirumangalam BC 63-36 in the inaugural match of the 29th annual Irulappa Servai memorial trophy State-level basketball tournament at Batlagundu on Saturday.

Five-wkt. win SRTM

Shri Renuga Textile Mills CC Juniors beat Nila CC Seniors by five wickets in the TDCA-Lions Club of Theni Mullai Trophy District at Theni on Saturday.

The scores: Nila CC Seniors 60 in 20 overs lost to SRTM CC Juniors 61 for five in 13 overs

Nila CC Juniors 86 in 20 overs lost to CPACC Bodi 87 for three in 12 overs.

Cosmo 175 in 25 overs bt All Rounders 118 for eight in 25 overs.
