Match ends in a tame draw

Special Correspondent

Barrington Rowland hits an unbeaten 100

Rajkot: Barrington Rowland hit an unbeaten 100 in Karnataka's second innings score of 249 for three as the Ranji Trophy Super League tie against Saurashtra ended in a tame draw here on Saturday. The right-hander batted patiently and made amends for his first innings failure.

Eventually after many hours of thoughtful batting he pushed Cheteshwar Pujara to cover and darted for a single to reach his century (199b, 8x4). It was also the time; the two teams told the umpires that the game was not worth continuing.

Batting practice

Karnataka's entry into the semifinals of the National championship was never in doubt after it took control of the proceedings on the first day and after Andhra ran into a trouble against Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday it realised that there was no purpose in enforcing the follow-on and chose to provide another opportunity to Robin Uthappa, who will go to Nagpur for the four-day camp and the first one-day international against the West Indies and to Barrington to work on his batting before the semifinals, scheduled to start on January 23.

Uthappa threw his wicket away slashing Kanaiya Vaghela. It was poor cricket by the opener who has amassed runs this season and has been rewarded by the National selectors. But Barrington and C. Raghu, who plays his cricket hard and likes to place a heavy price on his wicket, produced a partnership of 136 runs for the second wicket.

Drab affair

Around tea break Rahul Dravid left the ground and Saurashtra offered a chance to wicketkeeper Sagar Jogiyani to bowl a couple of overs. The home team stretched the slow and sluggish nature of the game a bit more by appearing in the middle long after umpires Sanjeev Rao and M.S.S. Ranamawat had taken their positions after tea break.

The match had virtually come to a halt as a contest after Karnataka had made sufficient inroads on Friday and made certain of the two points.
